A Reflection on Veterans and Sports: Impact Through Sacrifice This past weekend, The United States of America stood united, through tragedy, heartbreak, loss, and of course, to honor those who fight for our everyday freedom. Veterans Day weekend is much more than a day off from school or an excuse to BBQ. It is a dedicated period of time in which we as U.S. citizens take time from our lives to truly reflect and honor the brave men and women who, day in and day out, fight non-stop for people they don’t even know. Throughout the course of the weekend, many professional sports venues across the country made special accommodations as well as gave special tribute in order to properly honor our military heroes. Although many not see the similarities between athletics and the military, there are more than meets the eye. If you have ever played on a competitive sports team, you know that the plays around you are considered more than just teammates. Through tedious practices, hard work, conditioning, wins, losses, pain and suffering, those teammates become much more than that, they become family. Now multiply that same hard work and those same bonds by ten, and you have yourself the strength, dedication and chemistry that is displayed throughout our U.S. military members. In a country that prides itself so much on both the success of our athletics as well as the success and strength of our military, it only makes sense that the two would share numerous qualities as well as significance to our Nations citizens. Athletes and members of the Military have so much in common, that there have been numerous professional athletes who have given up their glamours lives to go and defend our country. Athletes such as Pat Tillman, Ted Williams Joe Lewis, Jackie Robinson, Shauna Rohbock, and the admiral himself, David Robinson. Those are just a few names of hundreds of former and current professional athletes who chose to put there athletic careers on hold to pursue a life of fighting for their country. Professional Athlete or not, many citizens share pride for their country, they chose to defend their country, the members of the U.S. military do this, not for the glamor or the fame, because sadly there is none. They do it purely because they chose to give back and fight for a Nation that has and will continue to give opportunities to all those who need it. This past weekend was a reminder for all of us to be grateful for all of the brave men and women that serve in our military. Take advantage of everyday you have, knowing that there is someone out there fighting for you.
